Why I’m Cheating on Canada With Ireland

20Jun12

All the signs warned me that I shouldn’t do it, but I couldn’t resist the temptation. (Sidenote: I did, in fact, go beyond that sign onto the edge of the Cliffs of Moher. Couldn’t help it.)

I’m a cheater. I’ve done it before and, in about a week and a half, I’m about to do it again. And I don’t feel badly about it. I know I should come clean about what happened last year, especially since I’m about to do it again, so here goes, Canada…

Canada, I love you. I mean, I really love you and I never want to leave you, but sometimes I get a little bored with you. Sure, you’ve got amazing mountains, incredible bodies of water, and a lovely personality, but sometimes, a girl just needs a change. For instance:

  • Sometimes you can be a bit moody. I mean, are you hot? Are you cold? Which is it?? For example, today it is about 35C with a humidex of 40C (95F and 104F, respectively), but in a few months, you’ll be somewhere around the -20C (-4F) mark, with a windchill of around -25C (-13F). Really? What am I to do with that? You’re all over the place!
  • For the most part, you’re quite polite, but sometimes, sometimes, being in a big city like Toronto brings out the worst in you. I feel like that’s something you need to work on.
  • Quite often, you’re far too busy. It’s always go-go-GO with you. Occasionally, I’d like to just relax and enjoy the simpler aspects of life. I’m not sure that you’re able to do that anymore. You’ve changed.
  • Sometimes I think you’re a little too young for me. I might need to be with someone a little more mature, who has more life experience.
  • You’re a little too organised. I need a little more chaos and drama in my life to keep things interesting.

I think that about sums it up. What’s that, you ask? Why am I choosing Ireland to cheat with?? Are you sure you want to go there? It might sting a little…okay. You and I have been together for a long time, and you deserve to know the truth, I suppose. I did have a liaison with Ireland last year, and I fell in love. Not the kind of love that would make me leave you, but the kind of love that makes me want to go all Bridges of Madison County on you. Here’s why:

  • Ireland is stable (at least temperature-wise). It decided, early on, exactly what it wanted to be, and there are no drastic changes in its temperment (temperature?). It varies between 4C and 18C (39F and 64F, respectively), and you always know what you’re going to get: rain. I find that comforting.

Cold? Windy? Rainy? Yes. Perfect. (Taken at the Ring of Kerry).

  • Ireland is the nicest and most polite place that I’ve ever been. It’s always willing to lend a helping hand, regardless of your background. It also has a cool accent.

Check out this guy. Last year, I was extremely lost and stopped him to ask for directions on how to get to Kilmainham Gaol…he took time out of his day to walk with me the 30 minutes it took to get there and then even came inside with me. The Irish are the most helpful people in the world!

  • Ireland is SO laid back and enjoys the simple life. I mean, when was the last time you just sat back and enjoyed a pint…or 4?

This was the first Irish pint (but certainly not my last!) I had in Dublin.

  • Ireland has rainbows and leprechauns, and therefore, pots of gold.

This photo doesn’t do it justice, but this was the most incredible rainbow I’ve ever seen. After the photo was taken, I then paddled a boat across the water to reach the end of the rainbow. All I found were some Lucky Charms. They were magically delicious. (Photo taken in County Clare)

If they didn’t exist, they wouldn’t have to put up signs warning you that they were lurking about… (Photo taken at the Ring of Kerry)

  • Ireland has universities and colleges that are incredibly really old. Some of them first opened in 1311!
  • Ireland is mature and historical. If I had to characterise each of you, I’d say that Ireland would be like the old guy with a pipe in his mouth, a Tom Selleck moustache, and a story to tell (perhaps The Most Interesting Man in the World?). You would be like the 16 year old kid with a lollipop in your mouth, a goatee that had to be filled in with eyeliner, and an anecdote.

Try as I might, I just could not push over those megalithic stones. And I’m pretty tough. (Photo of Drombeg Circle in County Cork)

Do YOU have castles that were built in the 13th Century?? Yeah…didn’t think so. (Photo of Dunluce Castle in County Antrim, Northern Ireland)

  • As stable as Ireland is, it still has elements of absolute chaos that surround it. It’s a perfect and delicate balance. And it keeps me interested.

Not everywhere can be as serene and beautiful as Drombeg…sometimes you need to drive on an insane road that you’re certain will kill you. (Photo taken in Cobh, County Cork)

  • It’s really green. And that’s my favourite colour.

Fifty Shades of Green… (Photo taken in County Cork)

  • Also, it’s just plain stunning. I mean, knock-you-on-your-feet gorgeous…how am I supposed to act like that doesn’t affect me??

When you start to look like this, we’ll talk… (Photo taken at Carrick-a-Rede in Ballintoy, Country Antrim, Northern Ireland)

So, Canada, I know that this has been pretty tough to hear. I get it. But I just felt like you should know why I’ll be away from you for a couple of weeks…you deserve that. You’ve been good to me and I love you, and I will always come back to you.

I’m just really sorry that the day I land in Ireland will be your birthday…but don’t worry. I’ll bring you back something pretty, k?

*All photos were taken by me**.

** That’s not true. Most of them were taken by my Mom.

Do you think cheating on your country is okay?

Do you think my reasons for cheating on Canada are viable enough to ensure that Canada will accept me back into its loving arms?

What should I bring back from Ireland to ensure that Canada will forgive me?

  1. Lovely, innovative and very interesting post. Ireland is BEAUTIFUL!!

    • I agree. In fact, it’s so beautiful there that I actually considered leaving Canada for an extended period of time just so I could be alone with Ireland for a while… 😉

Thanks so much for stopping in and for your kind words, Sumukh! It’s always great to hear from you!

  2. 3 La La

I went beyond that sign too. Suckers.

    • Ah! Yesss! I knew I wasn’t be the only one to do that! It’s just so tempting and gives you an incredible view…how could we resist, right?

Thanks for stopping in, Lala! Always appreciated! 🙂

  3. 5 Frivolous Monsters

Have fun, but keep your money in dollars just to be on the safe side, eh?

  4. I’ve only been to the Dublin Airport, but even just going there, Irish people were so nice! It was unbelievable! Plus, I would love to live somewhere with that much natural beauty. I love the United States, but I think I would cheat on it for Ireland (and maybe Canada) 🙂

    • Well, mistress Canada is always ready to take on a new lover! (<—that's such a weird sentence…)

Yeah, I found the staff at Dublin airport to be extremely kind and courteous (me being from Toronto, I was not used to that and no idea what was going on…was I being Punked? I was sure of it). Ireland is just SUCH a beautiful country and I can't get enough of it, hence why I'm going back again in a week and a half!

Thanks for stopping in, OneWeek! Great to see you here! 🙂

  5. Of all the places to go to… you chose Ireland? Why?

    It’s a dump!

Never been there of course, I just like laughing at the Irish like all good English boys like to.

    • Somehow, I knew you’d have something to say about Ireland…haha.

I’ve been to several countries (including England) and had a blast visiting each of them, but Ireland was something unto itself – the people are AMAZING, the scenery is breath-taking, the weather…sucks (but so does the weather in England!). There’s just something about the place that made me fall in love with it.

Also, they have Gaelic football. While I don’t understand the game at all, I like how violent it can be.

      • Us older countries do have a certain attraction for the younger more frivolous types! Glad to see the magnet we installed in you last time is bringing you back.
As we say over here – “go n-eiri an bothar leat” – may the road rise to meet you. Our little country will be much greener this time – that wet stuff from the sky has been a regular visitor.

      • Yes, there is a certain appeal that the older, more dignified and distinguished countries have – if Ireland were a man, I would picture it with salt-and-pepper hair.

To be honest, I love the place and I have a hard time staying away from it…that is one strong magnet!!

I’ve been checking the weather in Dublin, Belfast, Cork, etc. for the past week or so and I’ve seen a ton of rain in the forecast. I think I was a bit spoilt from the weather we had last year – everywhere I went, it was sunny and about 18C. It only rained for about 2 days out of the entire time I was there.

I have a feeling it won’t be the same kind of thing this time round… 😉

Thanks again for stopping by, Charlie! Always great to read your comments!

  6. I think I have a good idea about why the Irish Dude spent 30 minutes on ya’ . . . the Blond at the end of the rainbow, I think he was using you as an excuse to get close to her. He must have been able to ignore those ridiculous looking shoes, though 😛

But now, what’s up with Toronto? Everyplace else I’ve been in Canada is friendly even after they discover you are from NY . . . EXCEPT Toronto!?! WTH is up with Torontonians???

    • Haha! Well, I don’t know if that was the reason, but I was grateful for his help! I was very lost…had no idea where I was going, so I’m glad he helped me. Otherwise, I’m sure I’d still be wandering the streets of Dublin.

Wait…whose shoes are ridiculous? His or mine??

Yeah, I don’t know what’s with Toronto. It’s true – everywhere else in Canada is very kind and friendly, but Torontonians? Well, we’re kinda jerks. We’re all caught up in our own lives, I suppose. It’s sad, really. I’d apologise to you, but I didn’t do anything wrong… 😉

Thanks for stopping in again, Sorry…always love when you comment! 🙂

      • I think he’s remarking on how a Canadian had to change her mukluks for sandals for the steamy heat of Ireland.

      • Yes, you’re probably right. I couldn’t help it, though. I mean, after living in an igloo all year round, the 15C weather in Ireland was just a bit too much for me…

  7. 17 Jeff Walker

Ah, Ireland. Where they fight using the Marquess of Queensbury Rules while playing the best brawling soundtrack ever. http://youtu.be/8Bm0RIs-VJU

Bum bum, bum bum, bum bum, bah-dah-bah-dah
Bum bum, bum bum, bum bum, bah-dah-bah-dah…

Have a fantastic time! Were that I be tipping a pint with ye.

    • That. Was. Awesome.

Thanks so much, Jeff! And thanks for sharing the link!! (Also, I’ll try to knock back an extra pint for ya…) 😉

  8. 19 Rene

Great blog, maybe one day I will get there again.:)

  9. Ahh! I’ve always had a burning desire to visit Ireland! Now ’tis aflame! Cute dude, pcc! And you’re a Stout grrl! Me too! Wonderful trip and post!

    • Oh, love, you should definitely visit!! It is the most incredible place that I’ve ever been, and I fell more deeply in love with it every minute I was there. I’ve been blessed enough to visit countries like England, France, Switzerland, etc., but none of them compare to Ireland, in my opinion! It’s beautiful!!

Yeah, I’m a Stout girl! I love the black stuff. 🙂

Thanks so much for dropping in again, Victoria! I always love when you visit! 😀

  10. All true! And yes, I had to go to the edge of the cliffs, too. 🙂

    • Yeah, there’s something about the cliffs that just beckons you, eh? You feel as though you will get an unadulterated view, but only if you go to that cliff’s edge.

Thanks so much for dropping in, Home Tome! It’s always great to see new faces here. 🙂

  11. Never been there, but just the spelling of the place names is fascinating.

    • True. But it makes it rather difficult to get directions when you can’t even pronounce the Gaelic words.

      Trust me on that one…

Thanks, Kitchen! So great to have you drop by again! 🙂

  12. Great post! I have yet to visit Ireland but I do eat Lucky Charms occassionally. 🙂

    • Lucky Charms are a good start, but I’d have been more impressed if you’d seen a leprechaun.

Thanks for dropping by and taking the time to comment, Rod! Much appreciated! 😉

      • I have never seen a Leprechaun… but I have played one on TV. does that count? 🙂

      • If you give me a giant pot of gold, we’ll talk…

      • I’ll see what I can do. In the meantime, I have a bunch of magically delicious marshmellows.

      • Okay. That might work…as long as you throw out the cereal. I only want the marshmallows, anyway.

Oh, and toss in some Froot Loops too, would ya? They’re not Irish; they’re just tasty.

      • I tolerate the cereal to get to the marshmellows! Why don’t they just sell them???

Fruit Loops are delicious! Now you’re making me hungry!

      • I think they do sell them…they’re just called marshmallows. You can put them in hot chocolate or roast them by the fire… 😉

I’m joking. Obviously I agree that the Lucky Charms marshmallows are WAY better than any other marshmallow! I like putting them in with my Froot Loops.

  13. Great post, very funny, made me smile the whole way through, although I also found myself indulging in occasional head-shaking (and of course tut-tutting) during Leprechaun comments ! But in general your lovely eulogizing of Ireland makes me want to go there immediately. And I would, except for the fact i already live in Dublin. As the chap on the ground, by the way, I feel honour-bound to tell you the weather has been hideous the last few days. I just checked the Irish Meteorological site though and it does appear to be get a bit better soon. So that’s something I guess. I’m sure you know how changable it is here, probably by the middle of next week the sun will be splitting the rocks, then there will be a weeks rain, and probably a flood. Anyhow, enjoy your time here. In fact, feel free to get in touch if you’d like any advice about Dublin or the old buildings here. In the meanwhile, keep up great writing. I’m already looking forward to hearing more observations from your stay! Céad míle fáilte romhat- – Arran.

    • Hey man, I know that the Leprechaun comments must get annoying for you Irish boys…probably as annoying as “Do you live in an igloo?” comments do for Canadians. Ridiculous stereotypes. But, you know I had to go there, right? 😉

Yes, I’ve been keeping a close eye on the weather in Ireland for the next couple of weeks since I’ll be travelling from Dublin, to Belfast, to Cork, to Waterford, and back to Dublin again! And, I’ve got to tell you, I’m looking forward to the reprieve I’ll get from the insanely hot weather we’ve been having here in Toronto for the past couple of weeks! Chillier temperatures and spurts of rain will be a welcome relief…for a while.

Thanks so much for stopping by and for your kind words, Arran! They’re very much appreciated! 😀

      • My pleasure, as I said I really enjoyed the writing and the humour, And thanks very much to you too, for your visit and your kind words. Delighted you were interested in our old Dublin buildings. There’ll be more articles and quizes to follow, so please stay in touch. I’ll also be running a couple of our new tours next week, so you could even attend one of those, when you touch down in Dublin. Travel safe, hope to see you in Dublin some time. 🙂 Arran.

      • Well, thanks very much, Arran! I’ll keep that in mind! 😀

  14. Chrisss :D!!! You don’t know how much I’ve missed your supa” interesting posts!!!

The touch of fun you put on them makes me laugh almost ever! And I see you had a really good time in your visit to Ireland. I’ve never been to the UK , though this summer I may had that chance 🙂

Once my exams ended I said : I really need to check out PCC’s blog and read what does she have to say of interesting!

And after reading that, I may consider the option of visiting Ireland…but I’m afraid it will be England my choice :/

( But You know one of my weaknesses is Canada…such a good example of serious and admirable country)

    • Hey Javi! Aww…thanks so much for taking the time to drop in and say such nice stuff. 🙂

Also, I’ve been to England, and I’ve been to Ireland – in my opinion, as great as England is, it doesn’t quite compare with the beauty of Ireland, so go to IE first! 🙂

But, yeah, before you go to either of those places, come to Canada first – it’s pretty amazing. I’m not saying that because I’m biased or anything… 😉

Thanks again, Javi! It’s good to hear from you again!

  15. Looks like a wonderful place to go.

    • It sure is! I would certainly recommend it…obviously, judging by this post…haha.

Thanks for stopping in and taking the time to comment, Connie! Always appreciated! 🙂

  16. Awesome post! Incredible pictures. Thank you.

  17. Just wanted to say thanks so much for stopping by our blog and liking our most recent post about bungy jumping in Japan. Much appreciated! Hope you enjoy your travels in Ireland! 🙂

    • Well, I’m glad you were Freshly Pressed with that post! It was awesome!!

Thanks so much for stopping by here as well! 🙂

  18. I moved from Russian to USA, and could not’ve been happier with my decision. I guess, I am a cheater – big time!;)

    • Oooh…not only did you cheat on Russia with America, but you even took the plunge and moved there too?!

You didn’t just cheat. You had a full-blown affair which resulted in your marrying America. Impressive! 😉

Thanks again for stopping in, NY! Always great to hear from you!

  19. Canada must be crying by now! 😉

  20. Ack! How did I miss this?

These are beautiful shots, Christy! Thanks so much for sharing them!

Cheating on your country is okay, but the U.S. is into multiple partners so it’s not really necessary for me. As it is, I spent most of my life in Northern California which by many accounts is the most beautiful place in the world. I haven’t been anyplace that would make me argue the point, but I haven’t been to Tahiti yet.

Canada has totally been cheating on you all along anyway. I mean what’s up with the French/English thing? Some of the money looks suspiciously British. Your most famous citizen is practically giving away the farm to the rest of world every year at Christmas. Canada’s army has only defended other countries, right? Suspicious. And Quebec secretly believes they are a sovereign nation. I say your reasons for cheating are justified. But remember, it’s the only country on Earth where Cold Stone Creamery ever served a Nerds Creation!

Things you definitely need to bring back from Ireland:

    A pot of gold.
    A leprechaun.
A sign that says something like “Nach dtéann an bpointe seo caite!”
Those cool rocks if you can figure out how to move one.
    Their weather.
A smile and some more awesome pictures to share!

    • Hahahaha!! Once again, awesome comment, Annie.

And just so you know, I did bring back a leprechaun…basically, he followed me here after I stole his pot of gold. Also, I did go past the point…again. And I have more photos of Ireland now, but I have to get a chance to share them!

Thanks again, Annie! Always love hearing from you! 🙂

Thanks for inspiring me, and may inspiration be always present in abundance in your life!

    • Aww…that’s awesome! Thank you so much! I’m sorry that I’m only just responding now, but I was busy cheating for the past couple of weeks. I just returned to the arms of Canada today. 😉

You’re fantastic, NY Parrot! Thanks again, so very much!! 😀

    • My friend, if you have not yet been to Ireland, you need to drop what you’re doing (immediately) and get on a plane. It is the most incredible place I’ve ever been – that’s why I went 2 years in a row!

And if you can toast me with a Guinness, I suppose I should return the favour and toast you with some Jameson tonight…if I have to. 😉

Thanks for stopping by! Much appreciated!

    The End

  31. 70 Mark Thomas

Happy New Year, Miss PCC Advantage!

I was just in the middle of writing a list of the blogs I enjoyed reading in 2012 and yours was one of the first that came to mind. I thought it just might be a bit better to sy it in person. No doubt you have moved on to other projects now (that is part of life) but I really just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed reading your very funny posts.

I was doing quite a long commute to work until July 2012 (4 and a half hours a day!) and reading your blog when I could was one of the things hat cheered me up!

I nearly gave my blog up at one stage so I know that it is hard to find the motivation all the time. Anyway, you really are very talented at getting people engaged. I was very jealous of all the people you had reading and making comments! 🙂 IN fact, I just looked at your blog stats and about 10 000 people have visited in the past six months even though you aren’t writing anymore! This is incredible!

I wish you a very healthy and successful 2013 and best wishes for all your future projects.

    Mark

    • Well, Mr. Mark Thomas, you just made my day! Thank you so much for saying such kind words. 🙂

I must say, I haven’t forgotten about my little blog here, but I’ve just been so busy at work and with life that I, quite literally, have not had a chance to write a new post, comment on anyone else’s (which I very much miss!), or even log in on a regular basis! Shameful, I know.

As for the number of people that have visited this blog, it’s unbelievable…I don’t know how they find it! I suppose I should post something soon, huh?

Again, thank you very much Mark, and I hope you have a fantastic start to the new year as well! I plan to write some more this year, so keep your eyes peeled (not literally…that’d just be gross…).

  32. Okay, whoever he is, he needs to give up some of your time. I’m just sayin.

    • Hmmm…I’ll let him know. 😉

How are you, my sweet Anne?? I do miss reading your posts very much, but this is the first time I’ve even logged in in about…umm…I don’t even know how long it’s been! I have to start reading/writing more!

Miss your face….and your blog. I’ll remedy that, I think!

  33. Happy, Inspiring and Prosperous 2013 to you and your family, Girlfriend!:-)
